“Smeraldo” from the album L’amore È Una Cosa Semplice

One of his catchiest feel-good songs (despite the song being somewhat sad lyrically), I simply adore this one. I really want this to be the next single from the album, as it’s perfect for the summer and would probably be as big of a hit as “Indietro” was, but apparently he said in a radio interview that “Hai Delle Isole Negli Occhi” will be next. Needless to say I’m not very happy about that. But we’ll see.

In case you didn’t know, the emerald, ocean and emerald sun in the song most likely refer to green rays, an optical phenomenon right after sunset or before sunrise, where the sun turns green for a few seconds. In the song he is basically painting a quite beautiful picture of a night they spent together, a night that he is playing over and over again in his head now that his lover is gone.

As usual, the English version “Karma” loses most of the poetry that’s in the original.

English translation of “Smeraldo”:

“Emerald”

The sky is the ceiling, the sea is the bed
A picture of that dream I told you about
And love…
Holding the pillow tightly and pretending to kiss you
A robbery at destiny and its blackmails
Denying the worst in me
Looking for the best in me
It’s like this, when I think about it it’s like this
I’m lost in this night that never ends

Between an emerald and an ocean I look at you again
A flip of a coin and for two hours I’m living with you
The wind to the east sounds festively
The storm is tired
And the emerald sun still watches us
Another flip of a coin, for two days I’m living with you already
A calm sea towards the east
And a storm within me

Living together makes me helpless
Practically the same but more absent-minded
And then…
Packing the suitcases and that same night
Giving you the answers, but they’re all wrong
And I never talk of us
So that I’m never wrong
But it’s like this, when I think about it it’s like this
I’m immersed in this night that never ends

Between an emerald and an ocean I look at you again
A flip of a coin and for two hours I’m living with you
The wind to the east sounds festively
The storm is tired
And the emerald sun still watches us
Another flip of a coin, for two days I’m living with you already
A calm sea towards the east
And a storm within me

A calm sea towards the east
And a storm within, a storm within me
