Tiziano International

An English-language blog dedicated to Tiziano Ferro.

Tiziano answered some fans’ questions for Glamour magazine:

You’ve named an album and a book L’amore è una cosa semplice: but is it really?
Love comes from a pure, spontaneous need, it’s like hunger and thirst. And a person’s heart has a need to nourish, to feel complete. In short: the essence of love is simple. Unfortunately, we complicate everything.

When you fall in love: what are your symptoms?
For me, the symptom is a sensation of urgency. Urgency to spend time together, urgency to feel good, urgency not to neglect and most of all urgency to take care of someone more than anything else in the world.

Will you write different lyrics now that you’ve told everyone you’re gay?
Rather than telling others who I am, I think it’s been useful to tell myself. Awareness of your own emotional identity is a fundamental thing, it’s the first step towards having self-esteem. In fact, the sphere of feelings is what defines us, makes us better and unique. Love is everything, we are projected towards the world. YES, today I write better…

What is your idea of happiness?
I’ve returned to live in Italy and put an end to my isolation. Now I have friends nearby, my family not far away, I live together with a person I love, I have a dog… In 2012 this is everything that to me means “happiness”.

What would you advise a gay guy who is having the same difficulties?
Not to hurry, to take their time. The human heart is a room full of very fragile precious stones, don’t let it be invaded impetuously. It has to be gentle, affectionate, sympathetic, because the job of loving yourself is the most important.

You dedicate your book “to those who have the courage to change life and to those who have the strength not to change it.” What does it mean?
I admire both those who have the power to reverse the course of an oppressive existence, and those who deeply love life as it is and are able to live it with joy and integrity. Both are great tests of character.

“But your shyness is also your curse,” you say. How did you yourself overcome shyness?
Shyness isn’t overcome, shyness is a gift, a privilege, a hiding place from which to view things in a completely different way.

You said you haven’t had friends for a long time. Today, who are your friends?
Those who’ve always been there, my friends in Latina. I’d left them all a bit hanging!

Do you have any advice on how to silence gossip?
I don’t know how to rebel or how to get angry. Injustice terrifies me, it depresses me, when faced with lies I tend to shut down, isolate myself and suffer in silence. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to advise you!

How do you feel at just 32 years of age, with a new album and already four successes behind you. Is it a responsibility?
No, actually, it’s like a domino effect of excitement and satisfaction that triggers inspiration. I’m motivated knowing there’s an audience willing to listen to my work. For a hyperactive person like me it’s a privilege.

How is your experience with Carla, the canine rockstar? If you need someone to stay with her backstage during your concerts, I’d be happy to…
Carla is literally crazy! She can’t ever stay still, she exhausts me and forces me to see what it means to live with someone who always goes at full speed (me!).

Do you still have a dream?
I’d love to produce a hip hop album.

If you were one of your love songs, it would be…
Oh dear, well, maybe “Ed ero contentissimo”: aching, sweet…

Tiziano, are you still on a diet or do you allow yourself a bit of junk food once in a while?
Junk food forever!

Your song L’ultima notte al mondo has for me been the soundtrack of the week when there was all that snow. What did you think of while writing it?
I have to say it was an amazing coincidence. It was strange to hear my song on the car radio while outside the snow was falling: it was almost surreal. It reminded me of when I wrote the song: I was in England, stuck at home because of a snow storm, thoughts were flowing and I started to open up to the idea of love.

What are your favorite movies, actors and TV shows?
Movies: everything by Almodóvar! Actors: Penélope Cruz, Paul Giamatti, Cameron Diaz and Kevin Spacey. TV shows: Dexter, forever.

How did you prepare the setlist of the upcoming tour?
I have 20 singles, if you add some songs of the new album… the setlist is made. It’s my life.
